The Wizards in Myth and Magic

Wizards are well represented throughout the Myth and Magic Collections. Depicted in the main part as benevolent figures, they are often shown either mixing or dispensing magic or as guardians, trustworthy and honourable. The cauldron long associated with the mixing of magic potions appears alongside the wizard in many studies. This is not just a traditional and fanastical representation of the wizard from fairy stories but a real and factual piece of equipment used by Druids, thought to be the source for the modern wizard, 2000 years ago.

Merlin the Wizard

Wizard's powers were thought to include the ability to foresee the future and this made them powerful men in the time of King Arthur from whose court we learn of the worlds most famous wizard, Merlin. Generally thought to truly exisit Merlin takes wizardry out of the story book and into the real world. Many towns lay claim to the honour of Merlins birthplace including Carmarthen, where Kings and Queens is based, the Welsh name for the town being Caerfyrddin meaning the seat of Merlin. Most historians agree that Merlin was probably Welsh reinforcing our home town's belief that Carmarthen is a magical place. The most renowned feature of the town to associate it with the Aurthurian Wizard is Merlins Oak. An Oak Tree claimed to embody a magical spell cast by the wizard claiming that should the Oak ever fall Carmarthen Town would flood. The oak stood in situ for literally hundreds of years before it was considered too unsafe to remain on one of the towns main roads. It was removed and placed in a display cabinet in the Civic Hall. It was of no surprise to us locals that Carmarthen then suffered the worst floods in its history, Fact or Fiction? the people of Carmarthen have no doubt.

Wizards and Dragons

Throughout the studies Wizards are often accompanied by dragons who appear subservient to the Wizards authority. Dragons appear almost as pets and the kindness and nurturing qualities of these men of magic is underlined by the relationship between themselves and the baby dragons or Dragonets which they care for. As both teacher and protector the wizard is shown as a dominant force in an enchanted world helped by the dragon who's relationship with the wizard is on the whole cordial and repectful The wizard is the most powerful and respected figure in the world of myth and magic.

Wizards and Whimsey

Myth and Magic is well renowned for its humour and some studies place wizards in the modern world. These pieces are often collected as a seperate group by those who enjoy the fun of imagining wizards in the 21st century.

Wizards, Unicorns and Fairies

The wizard as protector is a recurring theme throughout Myth and Magic. They are often shown accomapanied by other mystical creatures such as Unicorns and Fairies. The magical powers of the wizard are unmistakable in these pieces as they appear as the dominant force, trusted and respected by those mythical creatures that co-habit their magical world.

Gandalf

Perhaps one of the most famous wizards of literature, Gandalf is well represented in the Lord of The Rings Collection from Myth and Magic. The infamous wizard is depicted with many of the well known characters such as Frodo and Strider. he is also the King piece in the impressive Lord of The Rings Chess set
